The aim of the European Virus Archive project is to create and mobilise a European network of high calibre centres with the appropriate expertise, to collect, amplify, characterise, standardise, authenticate, distribute and track, mammalian and other exotic viruses. The EVA project is establishing a web-based catalogue to advertise and distribute viruses in the collection as well as associated products. In addition the EVA network also produce associated reagents on demand, to laboratories throughout Europe and also worldwide.

Health Protection Agency Culture Collection


The National Collection of Pathogenic Viruses (NCPV) is a member of the Health Protection Agency Culture Collection (HPACC) group, and is based on the CEPR Porton Down site, UK. NCPV was established in 1999 and is a not-for-profit, governmental body, financed through a combination of income from sales, research grants and HPA core funding.

NCPV occupies fully equipped CL-2 and CL-3 laboratories. Through the HPA it has access to a wide range of additional facilities. As a member of HPACC it utilises a range of centralised functions including. marketing, sales/order processing and quality management. The Collection is EN / ISO 9001 2000 accredited.

Tasks:

Leads work package N1. Responsible for the implementation of the BRC standards Experience: Over 8 years experience as a recognised virus collection, operating as a fully integrated business, supplying viruses to researchers around the world

Key staff members:

Dr Mark Outlaw: Over 20 years virology experience. Involved with NCPV since its formation (1999), initially as Project Team Leader, and from 2003, as Head and Curator of the collection

Dr. David Lewis: Head of ECACC since 1997 and Head of HPA Culture Collections Group since 2005.

Mrs Cathy Rowe: HPACC Quality Manager since Year 2000
